This one was even quicker, with a 0-60mph time of 6.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 143mph. Handling might have been tamed compared with the previous M535i, but the E28 generation car was still a bit of a handful in the wet. Today, it's really only the go-faster versions that attract serious interest from classic car fans.

So, there you have it. Against all odds, my 2003 BMW 530i stick sport is the best daily driver I’ve ever owned. I hope I haven’t jinxed it by saying that. It may also be my last daily-driver BMW, as models newer than this are considerably more complicated for the do-it-yourselfer. I’m enjoying it while it lasts.
Those looking for the second coming of the E39-generation 5 Series from the 1990s will be let down by this one, though. The 2023 BMW 5 Series is available in eight trims this year: 530i, 530i
With the original 5 Series, BMW's 530d led the way, the first car of its kind that could truly satisfy the Director needing to combine 140mph performance with 40mpg parsimony. The facelifted version is just as impressive - and even faster, with output up 9bhp to 193bhp. Even now, with BMW however, the only issue is price.
